The
Art Ball
There are a few things going on with The Art Ball. For one I am completely objectifying the art object. So much so that the
art object itself fits comfortably in a person’s hand, the size, the weight, it is a comfortable fit. The Art Ball is
meant to be carried around, to move from person to person, to travel, to exist beyond the context of the art gallery. Secondly
The Art Ball is a free object for those willing to participate. There is no monetary exchange as the ball passes from one
person to another. There is only a verbal agreement, a promise that is to be kept when the ball is given to another. As with almost all of my work I am asking for
the collaboration of others to either begin, exist, or continue my process. Here I am asking for the participants to continue
my process, not to complete my process, because the idea is for The Art Ball to continue moving, and not become a
stagnant representation. The only documentation I require is that I take
a photograph of the initial release of each Art Ball. Beyond that I leave the ball to exist without information being passed
back to me. In a way The Art Ball becomes self sufficient as long as it passes from person to person and the initial agreement
is kept. These are the only rules for The Art Ball, that
is when the ball is presented to another this is the pledge made as the ball is passed on to a new participant: 1. That you
can only have The Art Ball for a period of twenty-four hours. So either within or at the end of that period the ball must
be passed on to another. 2. You cannot alter that physicality of the ball itself, i.e. you can’t scratch your initials
into the ball before passing it on. Beyond that you are free to do whatever you want with the ball. 3. The Art Ball cannot
be passed on to another person that does not agree to these terms. I am relying on the honesty of a person to keep
The Art Ball in flow, because once I release a ball into the public I really have no control over what actually happens.
